A contemporary garden design in Bletchingley, Surrey, transforming a challenging north-facing sloping site into a bold, low-maintenance garden for entertaining.
Bletchingley Garden Design – A Bold Contemporary Garden on a Challenging Site
Located on the outskirts of Bletchingley, Surrey, this garden presented a series of challenges that would deter many, a north-facing slope, shallow sandy soil, and an enthusiastic rabbit population. Rather than seeing these constraints as limitations, the project became an opportunity to create a bold, contemporary garden that embraced the site’s character and delivered a highly usable outdoor space.
The brief was to design a garden that worked for entertaining and everyday use, while remaining resilient, low maintenance, and visually strong throughout the year. With the steep gradient dictating the layout, the garden was carefully structured into a series of defined levels, allowing each area to serve a clear purpose while improving flow and accessibility.
A sequence of entertaining spaces was introduced, creating areas for dining, relaxing, and gathering, all connected visually and physically across the slope. A new split-level garden building was integrated into the design, providing practical storage alongside a dedicated home office, and ensuring the garden supported modern working as well as outdoor living.
Planting plays a central role in softening the architecture and stabilising the site. The sloping borders were filled with a rich mix of robust perennials and ornamental grasses, chosen for their ability to thrive in free-draining soil and challenging conditions. This planting provides year-round interest, with colourful seasonal highlights, movement through the grasses, and strong late-summer structure.
The result is a contemporary Surrey garden that feels confident and considered, a space that turns a difficult site into a distinctive, functional landscape designed to be enjoyed in all seasons.
