Hampton Court Flower Show | 2024 Award

Silver Gilt Medal & Best Construction Award

The Sounds of Adventure Garden Show Garden at Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival 2024 was awarded a Silver Gilt Medal and the much coveted Best Construction Award, recognising both its design ambition and technical execution. Created in response to a client brief centred on sustainable travel and becoming Nature Positive, the garden is a powerful exploration of how design can communicate environmental responsibility.

The form of the garden is deliberately directional, symbolising focus, movement, and purpose, reflecting the client’s commitment to advancing towards a more sustainable future. Strong lines and carefully composed routes guide visitors through the space, creating a narrative journey that mirrors the transition towards regeneration and restoration.

Sustainability sits at the heart of the design. The garden is conceived as a light-touch intervention, with elevated walkways and a mesh metal floor allowing visitors to move through the space without damaging the ground below. This approach minimises disturbance while encouraging a deeper, more immersive connection with the landscape.

A central watercourse flows through the garden, representing the resilience and enduring power of nature. Its presence introduces movement and sound, reinforcing the idea that natural systems continue to thrive when given space and respect. Surrounding this, a mosaic of planting evokes diverse habitats, from meadow-like drifts to wetter, more enclosed areas, supporting biodiversity and reflecting the richness of natural ecosystems.

The use of charred timber references the impact of climate change, particularly forest fires, offering a stark but important contrast to the life and vitality of the planting. Elevated architectural elements further reinforce the idea of building lightly on the land, demonstrating how human intervention can coexist more harmoniously with nature.

Planting is intentionally naturalistic yet accessible, combining cultivated species in a way that feels abundant, immersive, and engaging. This approach moves beyond traditional rewilding, creating a space that invites connection while remaining rooted in ecological thinking.

The result is a garden that is both visually striking and conceptually grounded, a clear expression of how thoughtful design can support biodiversity, inspire change, and reframe our relationship with the natural world.
