A romantic English country garden in Reigate, Surrey, designed to complement a restored Victorian house on the North Downs with structure, vistas and planting.

Reigate Garden Design – A Romantic Country Garden for a Victorian House

This garden design project in Reigate, Surrey, began with a chance conversation and developed into a comprehensive redesign of the landscape surrounding a striking Victorian house on the southerly slopes of the North Downs. The house itself had been carefully restored by its owners, and the garden was the final piece — needing to reflect the building’s presence, history, and setting.

The site presented several challenges. The plot was awkwardly shaped, with a large beech hedge cutting diagonally across the main sightline from the house. Overgrown trees obscured views and overlooked a tired pool area, leaving the garden feeling disjointed and lacking coherence.

Our design approach was rooted in creating a garden that felt appropriate to the period of the house, while improving structure, flow, and visual clarity. We introduced a series of vistas set perpendicular to the house, forming garden avenues that draw the eye outward into the landscape. Each axis terminates in a carefully considered focal point, framed by trees, cloud-pruned hedging, and layered planting to create depth and rhythm.

The route to the swimming pool was transformed into a feature in its own right, with a sweeping crunchy gravel walkway passing beneath pergola arches draped in roses. This creates a sense of procession and romance, while softening the transition between house and garden.

Generous borders of trees, shrubs, and perennials were designed to blur the awkward geometry of the plot, disguising hard angles and reinforcing the feeling of a mature English country garden. As planting develops, the garden continues to settle comfortably into its landscape, complementing the elegance and stature of the house.

The result is a garden that feels timeless, considered, and deeply connected to its setting — a natural extension of this beautiful Victorian home.
