An intimate walled courtyard garden in Outwood, Surrey, designed as a calm, low-maintenance space to showcase a curated plant collection.
Outwood Garden Design – A Personal Walled Courtyard Garden
Designing a garden to house one’s own plant-collecting passion is perhaps one of the most challenging tasks a garden designer can undertake. It demands restraint, clarity, and the confidence to edit — allowing space for plants to breathe rather than competing for attention.
This Edwardian walled courtyard garden in Outwood, Surrey was designed as a personal retreat, a restful, low-maintenance space where planting can be gently refined and reimagined over time. The intention was to create a garden that felt timeless and calm, offering escapism without requiring constant intervention.
The small courtyard provides an intimate entertaining space, enclosed by high Victorian brick walls that give a strong sense of structure and enclosure. These walls form the backbone of the design, offering the perfect framework for a curated collection of shade-loving plants, layered to create depth, texture, and quiet drama.
Planting is deliberately restrained and thoughtful, allowing individual specimens to be appreciated rather than overwhelmed. The palette leans towards foliage, form, and subtle seasonal change, creating a garden that remains engaging throughout the year while staying easy to manage.
Vintage garden paraphernalia is woven gently into the scheme, adding character and narrative without tipping into nostalgia. These elements sit comfortably within the planting, reinforcing the garden’s relaxed and unforced feel.
The finished garden is a green oasis, private, immersive, and deeply personal. It reflects a love of plants, craftsmanship, and considered design, while demonstrating how even a small space can deliver richness, atmosphere, and lasting pleasure.
