Working with a client who has a deep knowledge of plants and a passion for collecting is always a meeting of kindred spirits. This garden design project in Caterham, Surrey, brought together a shared enthusiasm for plants and the challenge of reshaping a garden around an impressive, long-established collection.

The garden is situated within a frost pocket, and over time much of the planting had become overgrown and difficult to manage. While the collection was extensive, not every plant could remain. A key part of the design process was carefully selecting which specimens would be retained as the stars of the new garden, ensuring they could be properly displayed, protected, and enjoyed.

Once these plants were identified, the next challenge was logistical. Protecting delicate and valuable specimens while undertaking major garden works required meticulous planning. Heavy machinery, materials, and the site team were carefully choreographed around the retained plants — a process that demanded time, skill, and a deep understanding of plant behaviour.

The redesigned garden was arranged into a series of radiating rings, with each arc forming broad, sweeping steps that soften the upward slope and make movement through the garden feel relaxed and intuitive. This structured layout provides clarity and rhythm, allowing planting to take centre stage without overwhelming the space.

Within this new framework, the retained specimens were given the space and context they deserved. The planting now feels intentional rather than crowded, with each plant able to shine within a carefully considered setting.

The result is a garden that celebrates plants first and foremost — a calm, confident landscape where a treasured collection is finally revealed in all its glory, supported by thoughtful design and sensitive craftsmanship.
