A Victorian garden redesign in Reigate, Surrey, creating structure, views and family-friendly spaces to complement a restored period villa.
Reigate Garden Design – A Structured Family Garden for a Victorian Villa
The former garden of this imposing Victorian villa in Reigate, Surrey fell well short of the quality and presence of the house itself. The new owners had rescued the property from conversion into flats, preserving its striking architecture, including tall elevations, decorative tile hanging, and distinctive gables that gave the house exceptional kerb appeal.
While the front of the house made a strong impression, the rear elevations were far more restrained. Small windows offered little connection to the garden, and the outdoor space felt detached from daily life inside the house. The turning point came with the addition of a beautiful Marston and Langinger orangery and garden room, which transformed the interior and opened up long views towards the North Downs.
Our garden design needed to respond to this new relationship between house and landscape. Cloud-pruned Buxus and a quad of pleached hornbeam trees were introduced to anchor the tall elevations, providing structure and scale while softening the architecture. Elegant brick steps lead down to a limestone terrace, carefully positioned away from the natural shadow of the house to create a warm, welcoming outdoor seating area.
From here, an oak pergola guides movement along a sweeping gravel path through richly planted borders, creating a sense of journey and anticipation. This route culminates in a newly built oak gazebo, offering a sheltered destination within the garden.
Designed very much as a family garden, the scheme also includes a sunken trampoline and a large, organically shaped lawn, providing generous, usable space for play and informal gatherings without dominating the overall design.
The finished garden now feels fully resolved, a landscape that complements the stature of the house, strengthens its connection to the outdoors, and supports modern family life with elegance and ease.
