A sustainable, plant-led garden design in Oxted, Surrey, creating a low-maintenance, wildlife-friendly garden for a new-build downsizer home.

Oxted Garden Design – A Plant-Led Garden for Sustainable Downsizing

This garden design project in Oxted, Surrey, was created for a newly built home designed for a client downsizing and living independently. While the house itself was thoughtfully planned, the garden had been left largely unresolved at the end of the build. A builder-installed driveway and terrace formed the final stage of construction but had little relationship with the wider garden space.

Our design response was simple, plant-led, and sustainable. We began by removing an unnecessary retaining wall, a remnant of the former property, allowing the garden to breathe and creating space for a large, level oval lawn. This soft geometry keeps the eye moving through the space, increases usable margins, and provides flexibility for paths and planting without feeling rigid or over-designed.

Breedon gravel paths establish a gentle route around the property, reducing the need for extensive hard surfacing while improving drainage. These paths lead to a rose-clad oak pergola, which connects the main garden to the utility area and greenhouse, encouraging everyday use rather than separation.

Planting was designed for high impact with low maintenance, prioritising good ground coverage, seasonal interest, and long-term resilience. A wildflower meadow was introduced at the far end of the garden to support biodiversity, while a winter garden alongside the drive offers structure and interest through winter stems followed by spring flowering bulbs and perennials. A carefully positioned feature Acer has become a seasonal focal point at the entrance, while Pyrus ‘Chanticleer’ trees provide dappled shade over the sawn sandstone terrace. The client’s much-loved water-feature sculpture was given a prominent position within the layout, reinforcing a sense of continuity and personal connection.

Sustainability informed many decisions. Existing materials were retained where possible, soil was reused and regraded on site, and enlarged planting beds now improve water absorption and soil health. Open estate-style fencing and a dog-proof gate were painted a soft green to blend with the house, while the new boundary wall was softened with Hydrangea ‘Annabelle’ and pleached Carpinus, creating privacy without heaviness.

Set on a leafy road in this popular commuter town, the finished garden is calm, generous, and deeply practical, a low-maintenance landscape designed to evolve beautifully over time.
