A country garden design for a listed equestrian property, creating clear arrival, sheltered entertaining spaces and open views across the landscape.

Nutfield Garden Design – A Sheltered Garden for a Listed Equestrian Property

This large country garden surrounds a former farmstead, now a listed cottage and equestrian property, set within open countryside. While the setting was beautiful, the garden lacked clarity and shelter. A long, wide gravel drive led to the house with little definition, creating a confused and chaotic arrival, while the rear garden was highly exposed to prevailing south-westerly winds, making it difficult to use for entertaining.

The brief was carefully balanced. The client wanted a secluded, all-weather entertaining space close to the house, while maintaining clear, uninterrupted views from the kitchen across to the stables housing her much-loved horses. Openness, shelter, and functionality all needed to coexist.

Our design response was deliberately bold. We began by clearing areas of scrub behind the house to open up the site and re-establish long sightlines. The layout was then structured around a series of strong linear views, creating visual connections between the house, stables, and the wider southerly landscape beyond.

Sustainability was an important consideration throughout. Wherever possible, we reused soil on site, reshaping and regrading to form subtle banks and planting areas rather than exporting spoil. This reduced lorry movements, limited waste leaving the property, and allowed us to work with the land’s natural character. Materials were specified with longevity in mind, and the overall plan favoured durable, low-intervention planting suited to an exposed setting.

At the front of the property, the arrival sequence was redefined to reinstate a clear sense of approach. A new arrival space now frames the cottage and celebrates the original front door, restoring order and welcome.

Planting was used strategically to anchor the house within its setting. Borders wrap around the cottage, multi-stem trees add structure and wildlife value without blocking views, and wider margins were sown as wildflower meadow to blur boundaries with the surrounding landscape.

The result is a confident, resilient country garden — practical, sheltered, and deeply connected to its rural setting.
